Housed in a historic train depot, the museum offers a short film, several informative rooms, and even an upstairs apartment that showcases early life in the depot. 

The Hinckley Fire Museum is educational, emotional, and profoundly moving—but designed to be accessible for kids, too. There’s even a scavenger hunt sheet to keep younger visitors engaged. Throughout the museum, placards, artifacts, and other tools help visitors of all ages better understand the devastation of the fire and its impact on the town. Outside is a caboose staged to look like living quarters for the conductor. Be sure to take a peek on your way out!

You can also stop at the Fire Monument on the other side of town. Here, you can reflect on the magnitude of the event, the lives lost, and those who lived through it. A self-guided tour brochure will help you explore each room during your visit. The doll room, filled with century-old toys, is especially charming. The museum even includes a reconstructed one-room schoolhouse! Then, vintage kitchen displays offer a window into everyday life 100 years ago. Other rooms include curated collections on logging, music, sports, and more. Of course, you can’t miss the train room featuring a massive train display of Pine County!

After exploring the exhibits, don’t forget to browse the on-site antique shop. It sells everything from button jars and kitchen gadgets to retro hats and jewelry. Finally, with a public playground just down the street, it’s easy to make this a longer, family-friendly stop. Especially, with kids who need to play and burn some excess energy!

Meander the Winding Trails at the Minnesota Goose Garden

Wrap up your second day with a peaceful stroll through the Minnesota Goose Garden in Sandstone. This hidden gem is the world’s largest living sculpture! The garden was designed to be in the shape of a goose, along with a nest and gosling. Open daily from June through early fall, this self-guided native flora preserve and sculpture garden offers all visitors a meaningful connection to the land, its history, and its people. 

Kids will enjoy exploring the winding gravel paths dotted with over 60 totem sculptures representing animals, humans, and spirit figures central to Ojibwe tradition. Keep an eye out for totems like the Bald Eagle, Timber Rattlesnake, and Moose. Each sculpture includes signage sharing its story and cultural significance. Additionally, plant markers highlight over 400 native species planted in the garden.

The garden is a living tribute to Ojibwe beliefs that every plant has a purpose, and there are no weeds in the natural world. The peaceful setting invites families to reflect, observe, and snap a few photos before heading home. Brochures are available at the entrance to further explain the garden’s design. Parking is conveniently located across the street.
